[RGC 130.] House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III

[read: House of Spooky and Freaky and More Spooky and Freaky]

This was part of my Modern Bestseller class, which I took with one of my sorority sisters Sarah. I think I’ll just reference them as sisters from now on. Sarah and I were really freaked out by this book… I can understand how it’s an interesting topic (coming from a newspaper clipping) but it left me with the “uh oh” feeling afterwards.

What is the “uh oh” feeling, you ask? Phoebe came up with it to describe something/someone creepy, uncomfortable, or just off-putting. That’s this book in a nutshell. Describing the ultimate demise of an Iranian family in California at the hands of strange psychotic impulses over a housing crisis, this book just sent shivers down my spine. I did not like most of the characters, and it didn’t help that we watched the movie in class because they were stranger on screen.

With that, if you want to read it, go for it. I just won’t be reading it again. There’s a good freaky and a bad freaky, and I’d say this was a bad, more unsettling kind of freaky. It’s worth thinking about these issues, but the story left me with such a weird feeling that I’d rather not think about it past this post and part of me thinks that Rory would agree with this logic.

5 out of 10 would recommend.
